Description
Kreger Design Build integrates verifiable sustainability with our clients' custom home dreams. By blending advanced building science and regional aesthetics, Kreger Design Build delivers energy conservation and sustainable comfort. Creating near-zero energy homes is our passion! We support the 2030 Challenge www.architecture2030.org

Bob Kreger (W. Robert Kreger) is both an A.I.A. architect and a New Mexico licensed contractor and owns Kreger Design Build LLC with his wife, Nancy, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Because of his understanding of building science he knows that energy efficient home performance is an attainable goal in this sustainable home niche market. Bob is branding himself to be an expert in peak performance homes and is educating clients, other architects, builders, vendors, subcontractors and the public by setting an excellent example. Bob is Co-Chair of the Green Building Council in Santa Fe, the 2009 Chair of the SFAHBA Haciendas Parade of Homes and a Santa Fe Area Home Builder Association board member. Kreger Design Build has won five Green Builder Awards since 2006 including the first ever award from SFAHBA in 2008 for Advancement in Green Building.

Kreger Design Build's most recent home just received the LEED for Homes* Platinum certification as well as Build Green New Mexico Gold, their highest certification. This particular home has an after active solar HERS Index of 12, which is a near-zero energy home! This is 88% less energy consumption than a "built to code" home today. (Note that a home must achieve a minimum score of 85, on a 100 point scale, to be deemed EPA Energy Star qualified. The lower the number, the more energy-efficient it is.)

Third Party Verification for home performance is key to assuring the homeowners and the public that what the architect and builder say is true. Starting with a spec home in 2004, Kreger Design Build attained EPA Energy Star Certification and then continued with each home they built thereafter. Customers immediately noticed the comfort and quiet. Once they moved in they noticed the money savings in their utility bills. Currently Kreger Design Build's goal for each new home (even if it is custom) is a HERS Index of 70 or less and certification by LEED for Homes, NAHB and/or Build Green New Mexico. Current and potential custom home clients are educated by Bob and Nancy to realize that spending a little more "upfront" dollars on their home performance to attain a HERS Index of 60 or less will yield high Federal and State of New Mexico Energy Tax Credits after certification. The clients living in our recent LEED for Homes Platinum home have tax credits of approximately $30,000!

Santa Fe, New Mexico, has desirable mountain views to the east and west so Bob challenges himself to design and create beautiful sustainable homes which do not rely on passive solar. There are so many home sites around the world that just do not have southern exposure. Bob realized this when he was on the Building Committee and the Site Selection Committee for Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity so he started advocating energy efficiency for every Santa Fe Habitat home.

All homeowners deserve a home which doesn't cost a huge amount to operate and is relatively economical to build.

*LEED, an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a national third-party certification system for energy-efficient, healthy, green design and construction. LEED-certified homes complete a technically rigorous process that includes a home energy (HERS) rating and onsite third party inspections to verify that the home is built to be energy and water efficient, environmentally sound and a healthier place to live. Green homes have substantially lower utility bills and may qualify for advantageous financing, lower insurance rates and government incentives.
