Description
East and West have met and they look good together at Asian Adobe, now in their new location one block west of the Georgia OKeeffe Museum. Their combined showroom and warehouse offers an extensive inventory of 100- to 200-year old furniture from northern China.
Asian Adobe specializes in Ming style furniture which is characterized by its functionality and clean, simple lines. Each chest, screen, cabinet, table, chair and stool in the store was crafted by local workers during the 1800s and has been carefully cleaned and restored to highlight the beauty of the aged finish. Chinese government authorities also have inspected each piece and the age and origin of all items has been certified.
While the selection of furnishings changes regularly as pieces are sold and as new shipments arrive, favorite pieces such as large medicine chests and red lacquer chests as well as altar tables, screens and carved chairs are usually available. The furniture is made with beautiful woods including walnut, cypress and beech wood.
Accenting the exceptional antique furnishings are several paintings by Beijing artist Guo Ming Fu who paints classic Chinese scenes using a refreshing, modern and colorful style. Also helping showcase the furnishings are a variety of colorful southwestern rugs, which help home decorators visualize how the merchandise will blend with local architectural details.
Asian Adobe has its roots in the mid-1990s when storeowner Fidelia Kirk lived in northern China and began developing relationships with the local antique furniture collectors. She also began collecting Chinese baby hats, baby collars and other hand-embroidered textiles, which are now available for sale at the store. Maternal grandmothers who believed that wearing the colorful silk bonnets would protect the babies from evil spirits made the hats. The hats are elaborately decorated with accessories, often in the form of fierce animals, and many have Chinese characters wishing the child a long life.
In addition to fine antiques, Asian Adobe offers irresistible accessories including leather boxes, stone boxes, baskets, pots, large bowls, Buddhas, Votivo candles, silk and cashmere scarves, antique baby hats, pearls and other jewelry.
